Ex-soldier kills spouse over opposition to second wife
A retired soldier has reportedly murdered his wife in cold blood, over her objection to his taking a second wife. The incident occurred in Igarra, Akoko–Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. The deceased – Mrs Onyonishoyi Ukana (Nee Akarutu) – was reportedly macheted in the middle of the night by her husband, Shakede Ukana, a retired Warrant Officer (WO 2) in the Nigerian Army.
Purge police of corruption, Jonathan charges commission
[By CLEMENT NWOJI, Abuja] President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday directed the newly inaugurated Board of the Police Service Commission to cleanse the Nigerian Police of bad eggs who he described as “viruses” denting its image. He chided the police, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), other para-military service as well as the military for indulging in promotions not based on merit, competence, performance and qualifications of officers. The president also explained that this constitutes the reason there are “viruses and all kinds of characters in the police force,” leading to abysmal performance of some of them.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who made the remark in a phone-in programme on a national radio station, on Saturday, said the issue of insecurity has distracted the present government from its laudable programmes. “Unfortunately, one thing that has distracted this government and Nigerians from what we are doing is the issue of insecurity that we have seen in parts of the country, particularly in the North.
