Taraba Speaker, deputy impeached
Reports from Taraba State, indicate that the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Istifanus Gbana, and his deputy have been impeached. The former speaker and his deputy were removed by 17 out of the 24 members of the Assembly. Both men did not attend Monday’s sitting.

I read with utmost interest Niyi Akinnaso’s write-up on his and others’ experiences with telecoms services in Nigeria and the double standards the providers exhibit here in Nigeria as against other countries where they operate. Like the writer rightly pointed out, our government is the major cause because of our weak regulations and monitoring of activities of “foreign investors” in Nigeria which most often end up ripping off the citizens and even the government (tax). I will also appreciate his critique of the NEPA or is it PHCN services in Nigeria.
Nigeria spends N365bn yearly on rice importation —FG
Nigeria is spending about N365bn annually on the importation of 2.1 million metric tonnes of milled rice, the Federal Government has said. According to the government, the country is currently the largest importer of rice in the world, a development it notes as adversely affecting its agricultural sector. A document obtained by our correspondent from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture on Friday stated, “Nigeria is the largest importer of rice in the world, spending N365bn per year importing 2.1 million MT of milled rice.” The government, in a bid to reduce the nation’s import dependence, had to raise tariff on imported brown rice and finished rice, it was learnt.
